A dental implant is usually a titanium or titanium-alloy component placed into the jawbone to support a restoration. It replaces the root portion of a missing tooth; the visible tooth is a separate crown or part of a bridge.
01 · TREATMENT GUIDE
Single-tooth implants
A single implant can support one crown without preparing neighbouring healthy teeth for a conventional bridge. Space, bone, gum shape, bite and the position of nearby roots all affect planning.
The implant and crown should be positioned for function and cleaning, not merely to fill the visible gap. Front-tooth cases often require detailed gum and aesthetic planning.

Implant-supported bridges
Several missing teeth can sometimes be replaced by a bridge supported by fewer implants than the number of teeth being replaced. The distribution of support, bridge length and bite forces are considered together.
A fixed implant bridge is not removed by the patient. You need an effective method to clean beneath the replacement teeth and around each implant.
- Number and location of missing teeth
- Condition of remaining teeth and gums
- Bone volume and anatomical limitations
- Smile line and gum appearance
- Bite, clenching and grinding

Bone grafting and timing
When bone volume is insufficient for the desired implant position, grafting or an alternative design may be discussed. Grafting can occur before or at implant placement depending on the defect and clinical plan.
Some implants can be placed at the time a tooth is removed; others are placed after healing. Immediate placement is not automatically quicker or better and depends on infection, bone and soft tissue conditions.
04 · TREATMENT GUIDE
Healing, crowns and maintenance
After implant placement, the bone needs time to integrate. A temporary tooth may be provided depending on the site and stability. The definitive crown or bridge is made after the clinician confirms readiness.
Long-term care includes daily plaque removal, professional hygiene, review of gum health and bite, and prompt attention to loosening, chipping or inflammation.
